ARE THERE BLACK PEOPLE IN BOSTON?

For many who are from here and have traveled to other places or those who have moved here for work or school, they have heard or asked this question. Boston continues to carry the moniker as the nation’s most racist city, which is punctuated by the lack of visibility and often intentional erasure of Black experiences, community, and culture.

This deep-rooted view of Boston holds weight when companies are searching for top talent, when Black people in other cities are exploring where to live, and even when those who grew up here are seeking to strengthen their connection to Boston.

The only way to change this perception is to change reality. Boston can become a place where Black people feel a sense of belonging and are fully engaged as citizens who shape the culture, economy, and vibrancy of the city. Boston While Black believes in this reality.

The outcomes presented in this report illustrate how we aim to shift the way that Black people contribute to, engage with, and are valued in Boston. Together with our members and partners, we are changing the local and national brand of Boston for Black people.
